Why Visit Uiwang?

When most visitors think about day trips from Seoul, places like Nami Island, Suwon, or Gangneung usually come to mind. But if you're looking for somewhere a little quieter with beautiful scenery, fun activities, and far fewer crowds, Uiwang deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Located just an hour south of Seoul, Uiwang is home to the famous Uiwang Rail Bike, a scenic ride that circles Wangsong Lake, as well as a thrilling lakeside zipline, peaceful walking paths, and plenty of cafés overlooking the water.

It's the kind of destination where you can stay active without feeling rushed—and it's easy to visit entirely by public transport.

Our Experience

We arrived mid-morning and immediately noticed how relaxed everything felt compared to Seoul. Even though it's only an hour away, the atmosphere is completely different. There were a few people enjoying a morning stroll along the lake, some cute dogs, but apart from that it felt like we had the place to ourselves! It was around 11am on a Friday, and there was no one on the rail bike course yet. The whole day we didn’t see a single other foreigner!

We started with the rail bike before the summer heat got going, explored museums, grabbed lunch nearby, then finished the day soaring across the lake on the zipline before relaxing in one of the cafés overlooking the water. We were in Uiwang from 10:30am until about 9pm at night—just taking things slow and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Suggested One-Day Itinerary

10:30 AM

Arrive in Uiwang. Line 1 goes directly to Uiwang station from Seoul, and is a cheap and easy way to get there. No need to worry about traffic or parking, just hop on and hop off. Wangsong Lake is around a 15-20 minutes walk from the station. You take exit 1, turn left and just follow the road down to the wetlands park. If you keep walking along the east side of the lake you will come to the rail bike ticket office. Or you can go out exit 2 from the station and take a bus to the Korean Transportation University. This cuts the walking time in half, but you will still need to walk along the lake to get to the rail bikes.

11:00 AM

Ride the Uiwang Rail Bike

The highlight of the day. The ride circles Wangsong Lake and takes around an hour, passing through flower tunnels, lakeside scenery, bird habitats, and photo zones. It's the first rail bike in Korea built on a lakeside loop. You can book your tickets at the kiosk in the park, it was really simple. You choose your time, basically lining up with the nearest hour, and then go give your ticket to the rail-bike attendants. They will help you get onto the first rail-bike in line and let you know the basics. There’s a seat belt, pedals and hand break, and that’s about it! It’s pretty simple. Up to four people can ride at a time. If you are travelling solo… we probably wouldn’t recommend it as it would be a very tough ride all by yourself. It can be a little bit of a workout even with two people! The amazing views and cool breeze over the lake make it so worth it though! The landscape changes as you cycle around the lake, with wetlands, flower gardens, forests… there is always something new around the bend.

12:00 PM
Uiwang Bird Ecology Center and Observatory.
After the rail-bike ride, we were feeling a little hot and sweaty but not quite ready for lunch. We decided to check out the Bird Ecology Center and were so glad we did! It’s not very big, and pretty simple, but it was a great place to cool down and catch our breath. If you show your rail bike ticket you get half price entry, and walking through the exhibits you can learn a little more about all the wildlife that lives in and around Wangsong lake. Almost everything was in Korean, and some of the exhibits weren’t really functioning when we were there, but there are some really cool interactive dioramas that allow you to get up close and personal. The best part though, is the observatory on the roof. There are free binoculars to look out at the birds on the lake, and large posters that help you identify what birds you are looking at! We are total newcomers to the world of bird watching, but this experience totally lit the spark!

1:00 PM

Lunch

Next to the Bird Ecology Center is a great local restaurant called 둥근상 시골집 (dunggeunsang sigoljjip). It specializes in Korean fish cuisine, and has just three main items on the menu. A grilled cutlassfish set, a braised cutlassfish set, or a braised pollack set. The braised dishes may be a little spicy, and are ordered to share between at least two people. We both got the grilled cutlassfish set and it was amazing! Perfectly crunchy yet juicy fish, fresh rice and lots of side dishes! The sets were 14,000won each and we were very full by the end!

2:00 PM

KoRail Railroad Museum

Next up, we walked back past the Ecology center and under the underpass to get to the KoRail Railroad Museum. We weren’t sure what to expect, but it was a surprisingly fun afternoon activity. Outside are lots of loco motors and rail cars from throughout Korea’s history, but we recommend not to get distracted and actually head inside first. Wander through the exhibitions inside (and in the air-conditioning), including a train driving simulator (which is very confusing but still fun to try) and a model train diorama (which only runs at certain times and if there are enough visitors but is still cool to look at). You can also get a stamp book from the front desk near the entrance. You can then take your stamp book and explore the trains outside, collecting stamps and enjoying the atmosphere. The outside exhibitions also have English explanations! It’s a great place to take photos with a cool vintage vibe. We were lucky enough to get a private tour of the old presidential rail car, run by students from the local Transportation University. Not sure if they provide the tours in English, it might depend on the students and how confident they are feeling! There is also a convenience store near the entrance, where you can get a snack or and ice-cream and enjoy in the shade while you watch the trains passing by outside. If you enjoy train watching this is probably one of the best spots in Korea! Uiwang is famous as a major hub for Korea’s railway history, research, and recreation.

3:30 PM

Zipline
If you're after a little adrenaline, this is one of the most fun activities in Uiwang. After a peaceful walk through the park next to the Lake, you will come across the Skyrail Tower. This 41 meter tall tower has a zipline, that goes down 350 meters to the park below. If you head up to the tower you will find a small ticket booth, for both the zipline and the adventure rope course. (The rope course only opens at certain times and seems to be aimed more at children. It’s not very big, and it actually closed through summer). For the Skyrail, you need to fill out a quick form and get weighed before you can go up. You should carry your bags with you on the zipline, so they weigh you while holding your bag. We had one bag that was very big and heavy, so thankfully they agreed to store it at the desk for us while we rode, and we came back and picked it up after. After the paperwork was done, we were escorted up the escalator. There are some stairs to ride the Skyrail, but only about one floors worth. Unfortunately, unless you have a hands-free camera setup, you are not allowed to film on the zipline itself. Up to three people can ride at a time, but they do stagger the take offs so that you don’t all arrive at the same time. We are okay with heights, so honestly it wasn’t a scary ride. It says it goes at a speed of 30-40 kms an hour. It was a pretty short ride, but gave you great views of the lake and surrounding park lands. It probably only takes 2-3 minutes to get to the other side. For 9,000won its not a bad way to spend some time. If you are a big thrill seeker you may want to temper your expectations though. If you struggle with heights it could be a good challenge to help you build your courage.

We have a dedicated video all about the Skyrail here!

4:00 PM

Coffee Break
After all that walking and excitement, we really needed a break. So we stopped in at Cafe MAXXI just past the park. We had seen it from the rail bike earlier in the day, and the view did not disappoint! They had a great selection of cakes and even little meat pies. We got a milk tea and an orange americano, an orange pound cake and a chocolate cream cookie-choux. The cakes were pretty good (especially the orange one), and the drinks were delicious. Pretty standard fare for a Korean cafe.
We highly recommend going up to the third floor, for the amazing views and quiet peaceful vibes. There is a huge terrace up there also, where you can get a great view of the lake. It’s a definite sunset photo spot! They had wifi and power outlets, so we spent a couple of hours here just relaxing, recharging and even getting some work done. We weren’t the only ones. If you work remotely it could be a good spot to work for a couple of hours while still getting out of Seoul and enjoying yourself! There was plenty of seating on the second and third floors. Unfortunately there is no elevator at the cafe, so if you are struggling with stairs and all the walking, it may not be the best option.

6:00 PM

Dinner

We actually stayed at the cafe a little longer, to recharge and enjoy the sunset. In summer sunset can be late, closer to 7 or 7.30 than 6. Depending on the time of year when you visit, you may have to hang around a little longer. If you prefer to eat earlier you could get dinner at 5.30-6pm then head to the cafe for sunset after. Right next to Cafe MAXXI is 농부네수제갈비 (nongbune sujegalbi). This is a galbi (pork ribs) BBQ restaurant. We got two servings of the classic marinated pork ribs for 19,000won each, plus some rice and a drink. It wasn’t the hugest amount, if you are a big eater you probably would need to order more than we did. The side dishes were all delicious, and they even gave us a serving of cold noodles for free! Grilling up our own dinner was a fun and relaxing way to end the day. It gave us new strength and the energy to walk back to the station and head home. Walking back along the path at night was not frightening at all. It was well lit, and there were a plethora of runners, joggers and walkers. It seemed like the whole population of Uiwang had come out for their post-dinner exercise! It was the most people we had seen all day!

9:00 PM

Head Back to Seoul

We were quiet late heading back to Seoul, but the trains run until just before midnight so it was no problem. It takes just under an hour for the line 1 train to get you back to Seoul Station. Just over half an hour to get to Sindorim station, in case you are staying somewhere along the Line 2 loop.

If you are too exhausted and need to get a taxi it will probably take around the same time, can cost upwards of 35,000won.

Costs

Activity     Cost
Subway         ₩3,400pp
Rail Bike         ₩14,000pp
Bird Ecology Center         ₩2,000pp
Lunch         ₩14,000pp
Railroad Museum         ₩4,000pp
Zipline         ₩9,000pp
Coffee         from ₩5.900pp
Dinner         ₩ 19,000+pp

Shorter, alternative trip.

If you have less time and want to get back to Seoul by the afternoon, we recommend you skip a couple of things and change up the order. You could start with the rail bike before it gets too hot, then walk through the park and up to the Skyrail. The zipline takes you back to the rail bike area, where you can grab lunch before heading to either the ecology center or the railroad museum. After that, you can head back to the station and on to Seoul. This reduces the amount of back and forth, and could get you back to Seoul by 3pm.
11am - Rail bike.
12pm - Skyrail
12.30pm - Lunch
1.00pm - Bird Ecology Center or Railway Museum
2.00pm - Uiwang Station

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit without a car? - YES! it’s super accessible by public transport.

How long does the rail bike take? - Between 40mins and 1hr depending on how fast you pedal.

Can children ride? - The rail bike? Yes, as long as there is at least one adult. up to 4 people can ride the railbike at a time. The skyrail? You must be over 130cm and 30kg to ride.

Can I bring luggage? - There are no storage lockers at Uiwang Station or near the lake. We had a heavy bag and it proved to be pretty inconvenient to lug around. We would recommend finding somewhere in Seoul to store your luggage before heading to Uiwang.

Is English spoken? - There is limited foreigner presence in Uiwang, and so limited English. Some staff members at the Railbike and museum spoke to us in English, but it could depend on who is working that day. There is English on the signs outside at the Railroad Museum explaining all the different trains, but basically none at the Bird Ecology Center.

Is it suitable in winter? - YES! In winter the Uiwang railbike allows you to warm up a little while enjoying the snowy vista of the lake and wetlands. There might be a few less birds, but as long as you dress warmly and bring some hotpacks you should still have a great time!

Final Thoughts

If you're looking for a day trip that combines outdoor adventure, relaxing scenery, and easy access from Seoul, Uiwang is hard to beat. It's close enough to visit in a single day but offers a slower pace than many of Korea's more famous destinations.

The rail bike is the headline attraction, but don't rush back to Seoul once you've finished. Spend time exploring the lake, stop for coffee, and enjoy the quieter atmosphere that makes Uiwang feel like a hidden gem. Whether you're travelling as a couple, with friends, or as a family, it's an easy escape that shows a different side of Korea.
